ABSTRACT
Introduction. Cancer in children and adolescents are the second cause of death in the 5 to 14 year age group. The objective is to present its incidence in patients under 15 years of age of two hospitals of the State of Oaxaca.
Material and method. Descriptive, retrospective, study of patients under 15 years of age, with malignant neoplasms during a 7 year period; age, sex, diagnosis, relative and absolute incidence for localization and age group were analyzed.
Results. 271 cases were registered; 58.3% were males; average age was 7 years. Hematologic neoplasms were the most common (62.7%), the most frequent of which was acute lymphoblastic leukemia with 82.4%, followed by lymphomas with 14.3%, and a slightly higher incidence of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Tumors of the central nervous system were in the third place. The female-male rate was 4:1 after 15 years of age, due to the higher incidence of osteosarcoma in male patients.
Conclusion. Acute leukemia is the most frequent malignancy, followed by lymphomas and central nervous system tumors, affecting more males.
