ABSTRACT
Purpose: To determine the prevalence of anencephaly in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico and the epidemiologic profile of the newborn and the mother.
Material and method: An observational, retrospective and descriptive study was carried out from the first of January 1991 to September 30, 2003. The reference frame were official sources and 1,500 birth certificates of perinatal deaths corresponding to 100% of birth certificates registered.
Results: The prevalence of anencephaly was 0.06/1000. A total of 91 cases of anencephaly were found, 48 female and 43 of males, a relation of 1.1:1. The greatest incidence was between 28 and 36 weeks of intrauterine life; the greater number was registered in 1992. The average weight was of 1,700 grams; it was associated with myelomeningocele and spina bifida in 18.7 and 2.2 % respectively. The maternal average age was 25 years. Most cases were seen in single pregnancies.
Conclusion: Prevalence of anencephaly was low and the association with malformations of neural tube is similar to that reported in the literature.
