ABSTRACT
Objective: To investigate the presence of any type of pattern among the nine Mexican indexed medical journals (MIMJ) during 1992 and 1993, and the type of articles that they published.
Design: Prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive and observational.
Material and Methods: In each MIMJ, articles were classified as: basic, clinical, biotechnical or public health research; clinical case (when five or less patients were studied); editorials, literature review and others. Information was registered in specially designed forms; it was described both graphically and numerically and correspondence analysis was performed.
Result: In the correspondence analysis three groups were formed: Group I: where in the following journals: Arch Inst Cardiol Mex, Bol Hosp Inf Mex, Gac Med, Ginecol Obst Mex, Rev Alerg, Rev Gastroenterol Mex, and Rev Invest Clin the following articles were found: clinical and biotechnical investigation, editorials, literature reviews and clinical cases; Group II: the journal Salud Pública, with public health investigations, and Group III: with Arch Med Res, where only basic investigations were found.
Discussion: When MIMJ were cojoined with the articles they publish, a very defined correspondence was appreciated in each of the groups, wherefore an appropriate classification of the nine journals with the eight types of articles was obtained.
