ABSTRACT
Objective. To evaluate bone union in patients who had delayed union or pseudoarthroses and were treated by transcutaneal electrostimulation.
Materials and methods. This is an experimental trial performed in 18 adult patients who were classified in groups A and B with 9 patients each one. Group A patients were treated by transcutaneal galvanic electrostimulation for 10 minutes daily in 42 sessions. Group B remained untreated as control. Exact test of Fisher was applied with a value for p ‹ 0.05. Time space from fracture to present treatment was from 3 to 80 months (av. 18 months) and 16 out of 18 have had 1 to 5 operations.
Results. The group A, 7 out of 9 patients had bony union in X-rays while in group B only one patient had radiological improvement.
Conclusion. 1) Significant improvement occurred in patients of group A. 2) Transcutaneal galvanic electrostimulation produce bone-union in cases with delayed union and pseudoarthroses. 3) This is an ambulatory and non-invasive method, so patients are allowed to continue in activity.
