ABSTRACT
Objective. To demonstrate the use of the AO external fixator as a part of the initial treatment for a severe open fracture of the proximal humerus. Material and methods. A 31 year-old woman sustained a Gustilo class III-A open fracture of the proximal humerus when she was ejected during a car accident. No seat belt was used. An external fixator was applied at the time of debridement and gross sutures were used for provisional closure of the wound. No infection appeared. Fixator was changed on by a Russell-Taylor nail 11 days later, with satisfactory bone-union. Results. In both cases results were good, first at initial treatment by fixator and second at late internal fixation for bone union. Conclusion. Open fracture is still the tipical indication for the use of an external fixator use. However, fixator must be changed by osteosynthesis whenever possible.REFERENCES
