ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess efficacy of a goiter size and serum T3 levels calculated radioiodine (I-131) single dose in toxic diffuse goiter treatment. Design: Quasy experimental study. Material and methods: From May 1, 1996 to May 31, 1997; 226 patients with toxic diffuse goiter diagnosis were treated with a I-131 single dose according to the following criteria: 10 mCi if they had a < 40 g goiter and < 400 ng/dL serum T3, n = 145 (64%); 20 mCi with a 40-60 g goiter and 400-600 ng/dL T3, n = 45 (19.9%) and 30 mCi with a > 60 g goiter and > 600 ng/dL T3, n = 36 (15.9%). Results: Efficacy of the single calculated I-131 dose was 99.1% in patients with toxic diffuse goiter. The Pearson’s “r” was 0.8803 with p < 0.0001 for goiter size and serum T3. Conclusions/B>: The I-131 dose, calculated by clinical means and serum T3 levels had a 99.1% efficacy.
