ABSTRACT
We studied the autopsies of patients under 18 years old at Mexico´s General Hospital during the last 30 years. Out 362 of autopsies of tumors in children, thirty cases were diagnosed as gonadal or extragonadal germ cell tumors. The male-female ratio was 1.3: 1. The groups between 0 – 5 and 16 – 18 years old were more affected. The extragonadal tumors were the most frequent 63.34%, localized more than fifty percent in the central nervous system, with mean age of presentation less than gonadal tumors (10.1 years). The most frequent histological subtype was mixed tumors with gonadal localization. The survival time was less than 6 months in the 70% of cases. Germ cell tumors, mainly those located in the central nervous system have the worst prognosis and without opportune treatment have a very low survival time.
