Hepatitis B and C viruses are the most frequent causes of chronic disease worldwide. Chronic liver disease can progress to cirrhosis and develop into hepatocarcinoma (HCC). Coinfection with both viruses may occur because they share the same transmission routes. Coinfection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a more serious disease with a higher risk of progression to HCC than HCV infection alone.
