ABSTRACT
The aqueous extract of the
Mammillaria compacta was tested for diuretic and antiurolithiatic activity. In vivo the urolithiasis was experimentally induced by implementation of zinc disc in the urinary bladder of rats and the extract was tested for ist antiurolithiatic activity against magnesium ammonium phosphate stones in albino rats. To determine the diuretic activity fasting rats were kept in individual cages, treated with either tap water or the plant extract, and the urine collected every 12 hours. Urinary volume of rats were compared with the obtained with diuretic furosamide used for positive control. In vitro homogenous precipitation method was used to study the antilithiatic activity by keeping the ph and isotonicity of medium constat. The study was carried out in glass tubes instead of collecting the precipitate over filter papers. Significant dose dependent reduction in the size and weight of the stones was observed after treatment in animals which received aqueous extract. This extract showed an increase in the 24 hours urine urine volume as compared to the control. In homogenous precipitation method the aqueous extract of
Mammillaria compacta singnificantly reduced the formation of calcium phospathe type stones. All the test were compared with an aqueous extract of cystone (a marketed preparation) for their activity. The aqueous extract wasfound to be less active than cystone.
