ABSTRACT
We studied seven patients with Madelung deformity secondary to osteomyelitis in 5 cases and fracture in 2 cases, with an average age of 11 years and a follow up of 13 months in average. Deformity of the forearm, as well as pain and impairment in function of the wrist joint were the reasons for surgery as follow: 2 distal alignment osteotomy of the radius fixed by Steinmann pins and ulnar shortening, one distal ulnar shortening alone, one non-union bone plasty by removing fibrous tissue and grafting with screw plating, 3 lengthening distal osteotomy of the radius by diverse external fixators. Results were satisfactory in 6 out of the 7 cases, improving functionality and anatomy without pain. One case who was treated by monotube external fixator developed pseudoarthrosis in the lengthening gap. Reoperation consisted in bone plasty by grafting. All 7 patients are, at this time, satisfied with the results. It is important to mention that even though there are several surgical procedures for treatment of this deformity, those employed for this study were a good option for the patient.REFERENCES
