Frecuency of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee

ABSTRACT

This is an epidemiological trial in order to determine the frequency of pigmented villonodular synovitis in a series of 1,150 arthroscopic procedures of the knee, for diagnosis and treatment for either traumatic or surgical pathology of the joint. Patients were seen from September 1994 through November 1998. Pigmented synovitis was found in 30 our of the 1,150 cases (2.6%). Treatment consisted on arthroscopic synovectomy in the same operative time. The importance of the present paper is related to the risk of misdiagnose a disease that is potentially malignant.
