Avulsion fractures of the pelvis in a Mexican soccer team. A report of fractures of anterior iliac spines, superior or inferior

ABSTRACT

Avulsion fractures of the antero-superior or antero-inferior iliac process are fairly uncommon. However their highest frequency is in rather those youngsters between 13 and 15 years of age who are in organized sports practice. This a series of five male soccer players from the U. of Mexico who were seen between 1993 and 1998 at an average age of 14.6 years. In all cases fracture occurred by the same mechanism, while kicking the ball with the dominant lower limb. Treatment was conservative in all cases, by physical therapy as well as a flexibility and strengthening exercise program. Functional recovery was achieved after an average of 54.6 days. A temporary decrease in sports activity and a progressive rehabilitation program are indicated, aiming to return to sports in the proper timing.
