The employment of gentamicin-collagen (garacoll) as prophylaxis in surgery for lumbar discectomy

ABSTRACT

A series of 200 patients who had one lumbar herniated disc, either L-4 or L-5, were operated on by open discectomy, from January 10, 1997 through September 30, 1999. There were 138 male and 62 female patients. Age was 42 years in average. The objective of the present paper was the employment of a collagen-gentamicin mixture (Garacoll) inside the surgical wound as prophylactic for infection. Surgical bleeding was 130 ml, operating time was in average 35 minutes and no patient was given systemic antibiotics. Results demonstrated no infection in all 200 operated on patients.
