In order to determine the average nosocomial infections on elective surgical procedures at out orthopedic department, we performed a prospective, descriptive, transversal and observational study. Follow-up time was six months, from october 1st 1997 to March 31 1998. Patients without pre-nosocomial infection, completed a clinical chart and without immune depressant medication, were included. They were of male (75%) and 2 (25%) female patients. Average age was 50 years. Obesity was present in 4 (50%) and surgical drainage in two. Diabetes mellitus was present in a patient. Dicloxacilin was used postoperatively in all patients and one patient received cefotaxime transoperative as well Sthaphylococcus aureus was present in patient’s cultures and Klebsiella was associated in one of tem. According to an antibiogram an antibiotic was started, besides in six cases a debridement was necessary. One patient died because of brain microinfarctions. Nosocomial infections average was of 3.5%. Sthaphylococcus aureus was the etiological agent in all cases an Klebsiella was present in 12.5%. Surgical techniques must be improved in order to decrease nosocomial infections average.REFERENCES
