Surgical approaches for total knee arthroplasty

ABSTRACT

Most common surgical approaches for application of total knee prosthesis are described. The so-called tri-vectorial approach is indicated in those cases of non-structured varus of the knee greater than 10 degrees or valgus lesser than 15 degrees. The antero-lateral approach is recommended for those cases of rigid valgus greater of 15 degrees. The trans medial vastus approach is indicated for those cases of arthrosis who had not angular deformity. Finally the extensive “V” or “Y” trans-quadricipital approach is indicated for those knees rigid in extension because of quadriceps muscle adhesions.
