ABSTRACT
A series of 96 american football active players, aged from 17 to 34 years (av. 21) who had injury of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), were operated on by 2 different arthroscopic-assisted techniques as follows: in 70 cases the bone tendon-bone grafting technique was done and 26 were treated by double semitendinossus-gracilis (DSTG) involving 4 tendinous segments. Operation was done in the first 2 weeks (repair) in 51 cases and in the remaining 39 it was carried out as chronic patients (reconstruction). Some operation had already been performed in 14 cases (9 meniscectomies and 5 repairs of the ACL). After a follow-up of 1 to 4 years results were excellent in 68 cases, good in 22, fair in 4 and poor in 2. Results were quite similar for both techniques, however, the DSTG was preferred in youngsters as well as in older players in order to preserve the patelar ligament in both extremes of age.
