ABSTRACT
Rectal prolapse begins as an invagination of the medial and inferior rectum that progress until it presents total rectal prolapse thru of anus conduct. A prolapse is caused by an extended mesorectum and a redundant sigmoid colon. The precise etiology it is still unknown and there have been proposed several abdominal techniques that consists in some kind of rectopexia with or without a resection, there are also perineal surgeries that can be done under regional anesthetics, without using odd materials and with less invasion. Rectosigmoidectomy with levatoroplasty (Altemeier’s technique) it’s a surgical technique that has been used in patients with high surgical risk obtaining hopeful results. The objective of this study is to publish a case of a complete rectal prolapse and rectocele using the Altemeier’s proceedings in a 65 year old patient that presented multiple medical adversities and that has gone under a previous surgery to treat the prolapse mentioned. Different alternatives of treatment for rectal prolapse will be discussed and reviewed.
