ABSTRACT
Designs of Tenckhoff catheter and the ways to place it are varied and keep changing: percutaneous, surgical or laparoscopic. Peritoneal dialysis is the most frequently method to deal with renal failure. In our institution we have 23 years of experience and have treated 700 patients; a retrospective study of 30 months, between 2004 and 2006 include all the patients seen in grade 5 of renal failure, recording age, sex, ethiology, diabetes, complications, results at the end of 12 months and general costs of the procedure. Results: A number of 777 catheters were placed, 754 (97%) Quinton-Kendall with percutaneous technique in 338 males and 416 (55%) females. The ethiology was diabetes type 2 in 58% of patients, hypertension in 9%, chronic glomerulo-nephritis in 3% and obstructive uropathy in 3%. Complications consisted in local infection (19%), leakage in 2% and perforation of a viscus, one case. Conclusions: This technique permits an effective immediate dialysis, has little complications, catheter survival is long and less costly. It is proposed as the ideal method.REFERENCES
