ABSTRACT
The purpose of this article is to understand the changes in the unit formed by the eye surface and the tear gland in the secretion of normal tears in patients who underwent laser in situ keratomileusis, who increased their visual symptoms and alterations related to the quantity and quality of the tear film. Several factors contribute to the intensity of the discomfort as well as to the time of recovery. However, the changes that this surgical procedure cause in the stability of the tear film and its evolution, are considered normal up to 3 months postoperatively. 42 patients of both genders with different refractive problems were studied; 36 of them were previous contact lens users. Pre and postoperatively Schirmer test, tear break-up time and fluorescein staining were practiced. Important changes and discomfort were observed on the fist day and first week after the treatment in patients with previous contact lens use or with preoperative changes in their tear film. Improvement was seen in the first month and no significant changes were found in the third month postoperatively. We conclude that LASIK has transitory effects on the tear film.REFERENCES
