ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the validity of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and the scraping technique in the diagnosis of primary skin tumors and tumor-like conditions.
Material and methods: FNAB and scraping was done in 117 cases of tumors skin, and the cytologic diagnosis was correlated with subsequent histology in 63 cases of the “Dr. Manuel Gea González” Hospital.
Results: 12 cases of 117 were insufficient to diagnosis. The 105 cases of the study, FNAB was done on 26 cases and scraping on 79. In 63 cases was correlated with histology, with these results, both techniques the sensitivity was 86% and specificity was 93%. The correlation between cytology and histology revealed 2 false positive cytological results and 4 false negative.
Conclusion: Clinical history and physical findings are essential to the proper diagnosis of skin tumors. By our results, we believe that fine needle aspiration biopsy and the scraping technique can give highly information concerning the histological type of skin tumors.
