A 65-year-old man, had a history of alcoholic liver cirrhosis presented with a four-week history of abdominal pain and a tender, nonerythematous mass (7 by 5 cm) in the right upper quadrant. He had a temperature of 38.3°C, a leukocyte count of 18200 per cubic millimeter, and abnormal liver-function tests: protein 4.9 g/dL, albumin 1.7 g/dL, total bilirubin 8.2 mg/dL, conjugated 6.5 mg/dL, Alkaline phosphatase 1068 U/liter, Aspartate aminitransferase 216 U/liter, Alanine aminotransferase 339 U/liter.
