The prostate as a risk factorduring a hormonal replacement treatment

ABSTRACT
Since the early beginning’s of the 1940’s it was demonstrated that prostate cancer is testosterone (T) dependent. It is perfectly known that T administration will promote cancer progression. On the other hand, men who have been castrated in their early young life, will not develop either benign prostatic hyperplasia or cancer, and by the contrary, they will experience prostate involution. Anyway, since the male life expectancy has increased in the last decades, several hormonal replacement treatments have emerged as a goal to improve the quality of life. It is also necessary to achieve a better understanding of the existent relation between androgens and prostate tissue, as well as the risks and benefits related. Now a days, it has been well documented that either benign or malignant prostatic transformations are also related to other hormones, enzymes, growth factors and genetic codes, all of which need the androgenic influence in order to produce their effect.
