ABSTRACT
Kidney biopsy tends to be the final element in the analysis of alterations in renal function, due to its definitive nature. Its use has diagnostic and prognostic value, and is determinant in the evaluation and selection of therapeutic measures. Unfortunately, it is oftentimes limited to subespecialty referral hospitals, where it can occasionally be relegated due to diverse factors inherent to our health system; this in turn leads to detention in acquisition of diagnosis, with a potential adverse effect on the patient’s prognosis. The following article presents our recent experience with percutaneous kidney biopsies in a General Hospital, where, in spite of several obstacles, we have managed to do the procedure with a practically nil index of complications, a faster diagnostic acquisition and an adequate therapeutic response in a number of patients. The object of the article is to demonstrate that the development of a percutaneous kidney biopsy program in a General Hospital is not impossible if there is adequate medical, technical and operational support.REFERENCES
