ABSTRACT
Hyponatremia is defined as a serum concentration of less than 135 mEq/L of sodium. It occurs in multiple systemic diseases and it's the most common electrolytic disorder detected in general hospitals, with an incidence of 1 to 4%. It is suggested that approximately 10 to 15% of hospitalized patients have a low plasmatic concentration of sodium in any moment of their hospitalization. With this background, a cohorte of one hundred and fifty patients have been studied in this medical/surgical center, with hyponatremia (sodium serum concentration of less than 130 mEq/L) from January to June 2002, to evaluated prevalence, diagnostic and prognostic. The prevalence of hyponatremia was 1.5%. Twenty five percent of the patients developed this entity after their arrival to the hospital. The normovolemic state was the most common clinical presentation. The prognostic was fatal for the 2.1% of all patients and was higher in the hipervolemic hyponatremia group. The geriatric population was the one that developed less hyponatremia during surgical procedures than young adults; in the same way the mortality was 50% less than in patients younger 65 years. Hyponatremia is the most common electrolytic alteration acquired in the hospital and can be an indicator of poor prognosis, been suggested that study diagnostic treatment of hyponatremia has to be standarized.
