ABSTRACT

We describe two studies of experimental surgery performed on live animal models in San Luis Potosí in the 19th century. The first one was performed by Dr. J. Piernas, who appeared in the magazine "Northwest Medical and Surgical Journal", educated in medicine at the Charity Hospital in New Orleans around 1850, and sent his proposal to operate by vivisection without antisepsis in sheep in order to treat aneurysms by means of selective arterial ligation to form a clot with weekly check-ups; it does not obey a specific surgical school, being an isolated event in our state capital. The second best organized event was performed by Dr. G. Pagenstecher to test a technique of intestinal repair secondary to abdominal trauma successfully in dogs in 1894. Although isolated events from each other, they are two valuable antecedents of the concerns of surgical innovation of our surgeons that were consolidated until 1916 with the school of experimental surgery of Dr. Darío Fernández.
