ABSTRACT
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have a large number of clinical and serologic features in common. The coexistence of SLE and HIV infection is still rare and there are only few reports in the literature of this association. False-positive HIV ELISA test results commonly occur in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. The frequency reported varies between 0% and 45% and depends on the test kit used. The importance of establishing a correct diagnosis is reflected in the therapeutic decisions. We present the case of a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus and suspicion for HIV infection due to factors of risk and HIV ELISA test positive, that finally was false positive.
