ABSTRACT
Introduction: sarcopenia is progressive and generalized loss of muscular mass. It is calculated fifth part of patients admited in ICU present some grade of sarcopenia.
Objective: to evaluate sarcopenia in the critically ill patient on mechanical ventilation assessed by ultrasound.
Material and methods: observational longitudinal analytical study to identify the evolution of sarcopenia using ultrasonography tracking in mechanically ventilated patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), using a high-frequency linear transducer (5-10 MHz) on the thigh to compare the thigh muscle thickness and the anterior fascia of rectus femoris and 2D elastometry. It was analyzed with descriptive statistics, Student's T for paired samples or Wilcoxon test according to the normality of the data, with p < 0.05 to be significant and using the SPSSv26.0 statistical package.
Results: 16 patients hospitalized in the ICU participated, aged 50 ± 17 years, 10 (62%) were male, three (18.8%) had a diagnosis of septic shock, one (6.3%) presented renal carcinoma, empyema and septic shock in, the measurements of the rectus femoris rectus widths in centimeters was 4.4 ± 1.4 at the beginning and 3.9 ± 1.4 after seven days (p < 0.000). Elastometry in meters per second was 0.9 ± 0.3 at the beginning and 0.6 ± 0.1 after seven days (p < 0.004).
Conclusion: sarcopenia was verified with rectus femoris and elastometry evaluations.
