Clinical characterization of patients with COVID-19 in Ciego de Ávila province

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the proportion of new cases of COVID 19, mild and severe, generates many questions about this disease among specialists. Objective: to characterize from the clinical point of view the patients confirmed with COVID-19 in the epidemic outbreak of Ciego de Ávila from September to November 2020. Methods: observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study with a universe of 519 patients confirmed with COVID-19 diagnosed by real-time PCR, at the "Amalia Simoni Argilagos" Surgical Clinical Hospital in Camagüey, from September 11 to November 16, 2020. The variables age, sex, clinical forms of presentation, symptomatology, history of chronic non-transmissible diseases, and discharge status were analyzed. Ethical principles were met. Results: the general mean age was 40.8 years. History of arterial hypertension (21,39%) and bronchial asthma (7,71%) were recorded more frequently. The main clinical manifestations were: cough, headache, fever, malaise, anosmia and ageusia; 63,58% were asymptomatic, 26,01% uncomplicated disease, 7,71% uncomplicated lower respiratory tract infection, and 2,70% severe pneumonia. The lethality was estimated at 0,58%. Conclusions: there was a predominance of the male sex with a higher incidence in the middle ages of life and superiority in the asymptomatic form. The general manifestations dominated the picture with those of the respiratory and sensory tracts.
