ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the characteristics of obstetric patients admitted to an intensive
care unit.
Materials and Methods: Descriptive and retrospective study conducted at the
General Hospital of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social Puebla, Mexico, in obstetric
patients admitted during the year 2023. All records of obstetric patients admitted to
the Intensive Care Unit were included. The information obtained was analyzed using
SPSS for IBM v.25.
Results: We reviewed 137 patient records with a mean age of 29.04 years (SD ± 5.87);
94 of them were multiparous, 16 with ectopic pregnancy and 90 with adequate prenatal
control. The most common past medical history was arterial hypertension, followed
by hypothyroidism and type 2 diabetes mellitus. One patient had hypothyroidism and
systemic lupus erythematosus. As for the diagnosis of ICU admission, 46 patients were
admitted for obstetric hemorrhage, 32 for pre-eclampsia with severity criteria, 23 for
atypical pneumonia due to SARS CoV-2, 10 for HELLP syndrome, and 1 for glycemic
uncontrolled and severe cranioencephalic trauma.
Conclusions: Intensive care is the best option for managing patients with obstetric
hemorrhage is the best option to avoid major complications and thus reduce the incidence
of maternal death from this cause. Although the sample studied was not large
enough to draw definitive conclusions, the results of the study confirm what has been
asserted in the literature in similar studies.
