ABSTRACT
This paper analyzes the work of two pioneers of Body
Psychotherapy and Somatic Education, Elsa Gindler and Charlotte
Selver. They taught mindfulness, although they did not use that
word, their student’s payed careful attention to everyday activities
and to whatever their senses perceived, including proprioception.
The historical context, the foundations of their practice and their
influence in fields such as psychotherapy, education, training and
contemplative psychology will be addressed. These women are
pioneers of Body-Psychotherapy and Somatic Education, so I will
speak about therapists and educators whom they influenced, such
as Wilhelm Reich and Fritz and Laura Perls. Arguments will be
given in favor of studying the history of Psychology and sensory
Awareness.
