A dangerous association: COVID-19 and periodontal disease

ABSTRACT
A literature review was carried out at Google Scholar (
https://scholar.google.com.cu), SciELO (
https://search.scielo.org) and PMC (
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc) with descriptors obtained from Descriptors in Health Sciences at:
https://decs.bvsalud.org/es. The terms COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, diseases of the mouth, gingivitis and periodontitis were selected (in English and Spanish). Available full-text articles published in English and Spanish from peer-reviewed journals and repositories of prestigious international organizations were reviewed. Periodontal disease is associated with an unfavorable prognosis of COVID-19 due to host- and SARS-CoV-2-dependent factors. This knowledge is important for taking preventive and therapeutic measures against COVID-19.
