Characterization of patients with lung cancer at ''Fermín Valdés Domínguez'' University Polyclinic from Viñales

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Lung cancer is an aggressive neoplasm that causes the death of most patients before the end of the first year after diagnosis.Objective: To characterize patients affected by lung cancer belonging to "Fermín Valdés Domínguez" University Polyclinic from Viñales.
Methods: A prospective descriptive and longitudinal study was carried out. The sample consisted of 52 patients. Data were obtained from family health reports, individual medical records and from the Central Lung Consultation Registry at the Oncological Hospital from Pinar del Río province, Cuba. Variables were analyzed by descriptive statistics.
Results: Patients between 60 and 79 years of age predominated with 71.15% of the total, as well as the male sex (65.38%). There was similarity between patients with white skin complexion (48.08%) and those with black or mixed skin complexion (51.92%). Smoking was the most prevalent risk factor (67.30%), while chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was the most frequent comorbidity (26.92%). The most common symptoms were weight loss (48.08%), cough (44.23%) and dyspnea (40.38%). The most frequent diagnosis was non-small cell carcinoma (61.54%) and the stage was III (42.31%). Combined treatment was the most common, used in 17 (43.58%) of the cases that received some treatment.
