ABSTRACT
Introduction: cancer is a disease of multifactorial origin that develops after long periods of latency. Current trends in cancer of
the digestive system, specifically, have been affected as a result of many factors, including environmental ones.
Objective: to characterize the environmental risk factors associated with the appearance of neoplasms of the digestive system in patients
treated at III Congreso Oncology Hospital in Pinar del Río province.
Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional
study was carried out in the period September-December 2019. The population consisted of 184 individuals and was studied in
its entirety. The analysis performed was descriptive.
Results: the most affected age group was 51 to 60 years old (n = 60; 32.6%)
and the predominant sex was male (n = 108; 58.7%). A predominance of intestinal cancer was found (n = 95; 51.6%), specifically
colon cancer (n = 66; 70%). Sedentary lifestyle turned out to be the most represented risk factor. A moderate statistical association
(p < 0.05; 0.2 ≤ V < 0.4) was established between the risk factors (frequent soy consumption and sedentary lifestyle) and the
anatomical location of the tumor.
Conclusions: a sedentary lifestyle and frequent consumption of soy were the main risk factors
for the development of neoplasms of the digestive system. The first two factors were associated with the anatomical location
of the tumor.
