ABSTRACT
Complete blood counts (CBC) and peripheral blood smears are key tools for approaching and evaluating hematologic diseases of childhood. The CBC provides quantitative measurements of blood cell types, enabling the detection of elevated or decreased values compared to population means. In some cases, these findings lead to initial suspicion of childhood cancer and subsequent referral to pediatric hematology/oncology. Assessment of CBC erythrocytic indices can guide initial approaches to the etiology of anemia. Analysis of the peripheral blood smear facilitates the correlation of abnormal morphologies with associated diseases, such as thalassemia, malaria, or autoimmune diseases.REFERENCES
