ABSTRACT
Asthma is the most common chronic disease among pediatric patients and is an important cause of hospitalization and absence from school.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of specific IgE to common aeroallergens in children with asthma and in control subjects in San José, Costa Rica. Serum samples from 121 asthmatic and 142 non-asthmatic children were analyzed using radioallergo-sorbent test. Statistically significant differences in the prevalence of positive RAST results between groups were found in response to: Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, 44% versus 27% (p = 0.007);
Dermatophagoides farinae, 35% versus 19% (p = 0.008); sensitization to house dust mites is associated with asthma in Costa Rica.
