ABSTRACT
Introduction: bacterial meningitis caused by Streptococcus bovis is a rare condition, affecting approximately 0.5% of meningitis cases in childhood. This paper aims to report on a case of a neonate with Streptococcus bovis meningitis.
Case presentation: a male neonate, born at full term at 39 weeks, weighed 2865 grams and was 50 cm in length. He was evaluated in the emergency department for symptoms of fever, irritability, and hypoxia that had developed over the course of an hour. Physical examination revealed a temperature of 38.1°C and a septic appearance. Lumbar puncture was performed, and Streptococcus bovis was identified in the cerebrospinal fluid culture. The neonate required treatment with Penicillin G for 16 days and vasopressor support during the first 72 hours for septic shock. The patient recovered satisfactorily and showed no neurological sequelae.
Conclusions: meningitis caused by Streptococcus bovis is uncommon and might be associated with severe cases of neonatal sepsis. The recommended treatment is Penicillin G.
