ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cnicos benedictus Linneau, popularly known as thistle, is a species used in folk medicine to treat a variety of diseases, although without scientific evidence of its effectiveness. Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial activity and phytochemical screening of the ethanolic extract of Cnicos benedictus Linneau.
Methods: The antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of Cnicos benedictus Linneau was performed using the disc diffusion method. Minimum inhibitory concentration values were determined using the broth microdilution test in accordance with NCCLS standards. Phytochemical screening of secondary metabolites was performed according to chromogenic chemical reactions or precipitation methodologies.
Results: The results showed that the raw extract presented a phytochemical profile composed of alkaloids, steroids, phenols, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids and saponins. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of the extract ranged from 32.0 to 205.0 μg mL-1 in Gram-positive bacteria. However, no inhibitory activity was observed in the growth of the Gram-negative bacterial strains analyzed.
Conclusions: The raw ethanolic extract of Cnicos benedictus Linneau has antimicrobial potential against Gram-positives, which makes it an important alternative for the bioprospecting of new drugs with antibiotic properties.
