ABSTRACT

Introduction: Psidium guajava L. has been shown to be a source of bioactive substances such as flavonoids. Extracts are often used to take advantage of these substances. Although the antioxidant activity of aqueous extracts of leaves of this plant has been investigated, it is necessary to know the best conditions for the extraction process.
Objective: To optimize the process of aqueous extraction of the raw drug obtained from leaves of P. guajava (guayabo) var. Cuban Red Dwarf EEA-1840.
Methods: The method of numerical optimization by optimal IV response surface was used for the experimental design and data processing of aqueous extracts of guava leaves. The drug/solvent ratio and extraction time were the selected factors, while the total polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity were the response variables.
Results: The optimized extract presented 6270 mg/L of total polyphenols, a value lower than that obtained by numerical optimization, while its antioxidant activity (5241.8 mg/100 mL) was higher.
Conclusions: By increasing the raw drug/solvent ratio, the total polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity of the aqueous extracts obtained from the raw drug of guava leaves were increased without a similar behavior being observed for the extraction time.
