ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the correlation between histologic and ultrasound findings of thyroid nodules to
evaluate the sensitivity of the TI-RADS method for diagnosing thyroid nodule disease.
Materials and Methods: Retrospective and observational study including patients undergoing thyroidectomy
from January 2018 to September 2023. After thyroidectomy, histological findings were correlated with
preoperative ultrasound reports.
Results: There were included 38 patients (27 women and 11 men); thyroid cancer was diagnosed in 37 patients
and benign lesions in 1 patient after thyroidectomy. The average age was 50.5 years (limits: 21-85 years).
According to ultrasound findings TI-RADS 2 was found in 1 patient, TI-RADS 3 in 13 patients, TI-RADS 4 in 18
patients and TI-RADS 5 in 6 patients. As for frequency of thyroid carcinoma type, papillary type was found in 32
patients, follicular in 4 patients, medullary in 1 patient and anaplastic in 1 patient. Correlation of the histologic
result with the pre-surgical ultrasound reports showed a sensitivity of 97.3%.
Conclusions: Thirty-seven true positives and one true negative were obtained, which demonstrates a sensitive
and specific correlation between thyroid ultrasound and the TI-RADS classification system and the postsurgical
histopathologic findings.
