ABSTRACT
Objectives: To determine the sensitivity, specificity, negative and positive predictive value of the ETDQ-
7 questionnaire as a diagnostic tool for Eustachian tube dysfunction in patients with chronic perforated otitis
media, as well as to compare the success rates of tympanoplasty in patients with tubal dysfunction and the
treatment received.
Materials and Methods: Observational, ambispective, longitudinal, analytical study including patients
with perforated chronic otitis media. Sensitivity, specificity, negative and positive predictive value of the ETDQ-7
scale were calculated.
Results: One hundred thirty patients were included, distributed in those with tubal dysfunction diagnosis (n =
95) and control ones (n = 35). The Holmquist test was performed as a gold standard for the diagnosis of Eustachian
tube dysfunction. The ETDQ-7 questionnaire was applied to all patients, with a cut-off point of › 14.5 for clinical
diagnosis of tubal dysfunction. A sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 97%, a positive predictive value of 73.5%
and a negative predictive value of 98% were obtained for the questionnaire. Of the group of cases that received
timely treatment of tubal dysfunction prior to tympanoplasty, 61.4% had a successful outcome.
Conclusions: The ETDQ-7 scale is a sensitive and specific tool for tubal dysfunction diagnosis in patients
with chronic perforated otitis media, allowing timely treatment to be initiated and improving the success rate
of tympanoplasty.
