ABSTRACT
Proliferating pilar tumor is originated from the isthmus of the outer root sheath of the hair follicle. Apart from extensive epithelial proliferation, it shares some characteristics with pilar cyst, such as cellular atypia and variable mitotic activity. In 80% of cases it affects adult women. It usually presents in the frontal and parietal regions of the scalp. It can arise de novo or develop from a trichilemmal cyst. It is considered a benign tumor, although it may be locally aggressive and sometimes become malignant. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice.
