ABSTRACT
Introduction: In Peru, as in other developing countries, gastrointestinal disorders such as
diarrhea and abdominal cramps are very common. The population usually uses medicinal
plants as a solution because of their easy access and availability, but many of them lack
scientific evidence to support their beneficial effects on health.
Objective: Evaluate the inhibitory effect of intestinal transit of ethanolic extract of Senecio
nutans Schultz-Bip leaves in albino mice.
Methods: Phytochemical screening was performed as a preliminary test. The inhibitory
effect was based on the in vivo model of intestinal transit, with activated charcoal as a
marker of intestinal motility, and as an inducer of diarrhea it was used castor oil. Four
groups of five male mice (Mus musculus) BALB/c were randomly formed. The first group
without any treatment (control); the second with the standard loperamide 1 mg/kg; the
other groups, plant extract at 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg.
Results: The phytochemical analysis showed a greater presence of flavonoids. Ethanolic
extract from S. nutans Schultz-Bip leaves slowed the intestinal transit of activated charcoal in a dose-dependent manner of 100 mg/kg (33.58%) and 200 mg/kg (24.34%); the second
dose was similar to standard loperamide which was 15.22% (p< 0.05).
Conclusions: It was demonstrated that the ethanolic extract of S. nutansSchultz-Bip
delayed the intestinal transit, with a dependent dose by inhibition of intestinal motility in
mice.
