ABSTRACT
Introduction: myositis ossificans is a type of heterotopic ossification that mainly involves muscle tissue. Heterotopic ossification is a pathological process, which consists of the formation of extraskeletal bone tissue, it occurs in certain situations such as trauma or neurological injuries, which in some cases limits the mobility of the involved body segment. The objective of this article is to present the case of a patient with myositis ossificans in the right iliac muscle secondary to a spinal cord injury.
Case presentation: 23-year-old male with sequelae of a non-recent spinal cord injury secondary to a C6 fracture, who presented myositis ossificans of the iliac muscle, generating incapacity for passive mobility of the right hip, which made it difficult for his caregivers his hygiene and mobilization. He was successfully treated with an osteotomy and excision of the aberrant bone tissue. After six months of follow-up, the patient presents complete passive ranges of hip mobility and no radiographic evidence of recurrence.
Conclusions: neurogenic myositis ossificans can limit the patient's quality of life. It is important to know the prophylactic options for cases in the initial stages as well as therapeutic options for advanced cases.
