Amebic empyema

ABSTRACT
Background: Amebic liver abscess is an extraintestinal manifestation of
Entamoeba
histolytica infection. Pleural empyema, secondary to rupture of amebic liver abscess,
is an uncommon complication of
Entamoeba histolytica infection.
Clinical case: A 38-year-old male patient with a history of alcoholism presented
to the emergency department with abdominal pain and dyspnea of several weeks of
evolution. A chest-X-ray revealed right-sided massive pleural effusion. The aspirated
pus was anchovy paste color; active
Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites were visualized
under the microscope.
Conclusions: Health care providers should think of pleuropulmonary amebiasis
in patients presenting with right-sided thoracic complains in certain clinical scenarios
(alcoholic males and malnourished individuals).
