ABSTRACT
SARS-CoV-2 infection causes the disease known as COVID-19, which generally affects patients with comorbidities such as arterial hypertension more severely; one of the main cardiovascular risk factors that is poorly controlled in the countries belonging to the Latin American region. For a broader understanding of this subject, a systematic search and review was carried out in different databases, obtaining 70,136 references; MEDLINE via OVID (6,158), Embase (57,662), LILACS (10), Trip Medical Database (1,197) and Epistemonikos (5,109). A total of 7 studies were selected following different exclusion criteria: two cohorts, three cross-sectional descriptive studies, one case report and one case series. These studies support and evidence the potential risk of people with high blood pressure to develop severe or even fatal conditions due to COVID-19. Thus, it reflects the importance of prioritizing the prevention or optimal treatment of chronic degenerative diseases in Latin American countries.
