ABSTRACT
Introduction: University students may develop bad habits and have cardiovascular risk factors. Polyphenols are bioactive compounds with cardioprotective capacity. Objective: To estimate cardiovascular risk and polyphenol consumption in students of the basic area of the bachelor’s degree in Nutrition of the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY). Material and method: Quantitative cross-sectional analytical study with a sample of 33 students of the basic area of the degree in Nutrition of the UADY, selected by convenience. Anthropometric and blood pressure measurements were taken; polyphenol intake was estimated from a 24-hour recall and the Phenol Explorer and USDA Flavonoids Content databases. Results: Cardiovascular risk was identified according to anthropometric indicators waist-hip ratio (27.3%), body mass index (24.2%), fat mass percentage (12.1%) and blood pressure (9.1%), being more prevalent in men than in women. The median intake of total polyphenols was 50 mg/day; lignans, stilbenes and other polyphenols were consumed in virtually null amounts. There was no statistical association between polyphenol consumption and cardiovascular risk. Conclusion: Students of the basic area of the Bachelor's degree in Nutrition are at risk of cardiovascular disease. Polyphenol consumption was low compared to other studies of similar population.REFERENCES
