ABSTRACT
Nitric oxide (NO·) is a free radical, synthesized from L-arginine, and an important vascular tone regulator. In addition, NO· has other physiological and pathological effects. Physiological effects of NO· take place when it is produced in minute quantities by constitutive nitric oxide synthases. On the other side, pathologic effects are induced when NO· is produced in higher quantities by inducible nitric oxide synthase so it achieves high concentrations. Excesive NO· production induces reactive nitrogen oxide species formation, and mitochondrial dysfunction, a condition associated to some pathologies such as diabetes mellitus, ischemia-reperfusion and several inflammatory process.
