The orthodontist in the care of the patient who needs orthognathic surgery

ABSTRACT

The orthodontist participates in almost all stages of care, in the diagnosis, planning and prediction of treatment. The orthodontist performs orthodontic procedure before, during and after surgery. This specialist controls possible relapses and carries out the follow-up up to five years after the osteotomy has been performed. This specialist’s expertise is key to the functioning of the orthognathic surgery team. For this reason, it is necessary to describe the functions of the orthodontist within the team of specialists who care for patients with dentomaxillofacial deformities.
