ABSTRACT
Introduction: small, round and blue cell tumors are highly malignant neoplasms that cover a wide histological variety and therefore a heterogeneous clinical presentation depending on the type and location of the tumor mass, which is why they represent a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. and pathologists. Objective: to characterize pediatric patients diagnosed with small round blue cell tumors. Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with pediatric patients diagnosed with small, round and blue cell tumors at the Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja Provincial Pediatric Hospital of Holguín, in the period of January 2018. to October 2020. We worked with a universe of 27 patients; no sample was selected. Descriptive statistics were used. Results: the most frequent histological type was Wilms tumor with 7 patients. Patients aged 1-4 years were more vulnerable (29.6%) and the slightly more affected sex was male (55.6%). Palpable masses were the main reason for consultation. Of the 17 immunohistochemical studies performed, 70.6% coincided with the histological diagnosis. Conclusions: the clinical and pathological heterogeneity of small round blue cell tumors leads to a diagnostic challenge. Wilms' tumor was the variant with the highest incidence, so the palpable mass was the most frequent reason for consultation and the renal system was the most affected. Routine histopathological examination with hematoxylin and eosin is a reliable diagnostic method.REFERENCES
