ABSTRACT
Introduction: the journey to securing a dermatology residency in Mexico involves navigating a high-demand process, including the Examen Nacional de Aspirantes a Residencias Médicas (ENARM) and internal medicine residency. This study, set in the context of limited preparation centers, aims to define the profile of successful dermatology residents in Mexico, addressing a gap in prior research.Material and methods: a 2021 survey using Google Forms gathered data from 40 recently admitted dermatology residents across Mexico. Information on demographics, academic history, enarm scores, and language proficiency was collected to delineate the entry profile.
Results: among the diverse cohort, ENARM exams were taken between 2015-2020, with 75% between 2019-2021; 72.5% were females. Successful applicants not only exhibited academic prowess but also had at least one scientific publication. Notably, 65% were accepted in the first year of internal medicine, and 87.5% within the first two years.
Discussion: Dermatology’s competitive nature requires more than meeting enarm averages. Competition is intensified by a limited number of positions, mirroring trends in the United States. Beyond academic and enarm excellence, this study highlights the importance of research involvement, with over half of admitted applicants having publications in indexed journals.
Conclusion: aspiring dermatology residents in Mexico face a demanding and competitive environment. While academic excellence and enarm performance are crucial, this study underscores the significance of research. The insights provided serve as a valuable resource for medical professionals seeking a dermatology residency, offering a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape and entry requirements in Mexico.
